May is Better Hearing & Speech Month

We know. Every month is something. And most months are many things. In fact, May has 13 healthcare awareness designations, and none are more important than the others. But here at Child Language & Developmental Speech, we certainly have our favorite!

Better Hearing & Speech Month

Better Hearing and Speech Month is an important time to promote awareness of communication disorders. While you might think with all of the information available on the Internet that parents are more aware than ever of the signs of a communication disorder, but in fact, that is not the case. While we work all year to provide advice to help parents identify and seek appropriate therapy, May gives us an opportunity to call more attention to speech, language, and hearing delays and disorders.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association says that 69% of ASHA members report parents of young children are not aware of early warning signs of speech/language disorders. Speech, language, and hearing disorders are some of the most common childhood disabilities. These communication delays and disorders are often highly treatable, and the earlier we intervene the better. Better Hearing and Speech Month is a great time to remind parents to seek guidance as soon as they suspect something. Speech-Language Pathologists are great at evaluating children and will help parents determine if their child is developing normally or needs some support. If support is delayed, future success in writing, academics, and social interactions could be affected.

If you want to learn more about early signs of all the various communication disorders, including Language Disorders, Speech Sound Disorders, Stuttering, and Hearing Loss please use this handy guide from ASHA.
